About Chiara Boschis and E. Pira & Figli

“Chiara Boschis: rock star, rebel, feminist, pioneer, entrepreneur, iconoclast—these are just a few terms that come to mind when considering this prestigious Barolo producer.”
Chiara was born into wine; boasting 9 generations of winemakers before her. She and her brothers Giorgio and Cesare grew up working in the family business, but the expectations at the time were that the boys would one day run the family winery, while the daughter would be married off—but Chiara had other plans for herself, she knew her destiny was home in Barolo.
In 1980, the legendary Gigi Pira, owner of the E. Pira winery in Barolo passed away with no heirs, and in 1981, Chiara convinced her mother and father to take out a mortgage together to purchase the E. Pira cantina and vineyards. By the late 1980’s, after Chiara finished her studies in business and economics in Torino and a brief professional career, she took over the reins at the E. Pira winery. Her very first wine, 1990 Barolo Riserva Cannubi, was a smash hit. She earned the coveted Tre Bicchieri award from the Gambero Rosso in Italy, and since then has consistently produced stunning, highly lauded, and age worthy wines. Production is very limited, a miniscule 5,000 cases per year and wines are made exclusively from the 27 acres of vineyards in the very best Crus of Barolo in the villages of Barolo, Monforte d’Alba, and Serralunga d’Alba.
As ‘the First lady of Barolo’ and the only ‘Barolo girl’ of the rebellious ‘Barolo boys’, Chiara has revolutionized the Piedmont in many ways including paving the way for a new generation of female winemakers and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to sustainability, long-term environmental protection, and biodiversity in the vineyards, and she is not done yet. For nearly 20 years, she worked alone, but in 2010 she was assisted by her brother Giorgio, his wife Daniela, and their three daughters, Beatrice, Elena, and Vittoria, who are helping to ensure quality for the next generation.
