About Cantina Scacciadiavoli

As Montefalco’s oldest winery, the current generation of Cantina Scacciadiavoli produce only a handful of wines with even fewer exported to the US, all made from the ancient grape varietals of the area, Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, and the great red wine of the region, Sagrantino. The fourth generation of the Pambuffetti family, winemakers and owners of Scacciadiavoli, find themselves somewhere between legend, tradition, and modernity as they carve out a small piece of the international wine market for their region of Umbria and it’s local varietals.

Legend. The name Scacciadiavoli translates to ‘to chase away the devil’, and refers to the 14th century story of a young woman possessed by the devil, to whom the exorcist made her drink the local wine, thereby succeeding in driving away the demon.

Tradition. Solid and imposing, the winery appears almost as a fortress, built into the hillside and partly underground. The difference in level of the land allows ‘grapes, men, and means’ to get directly to the top floor, where the fermentation takes place, then by way of gravity the wines are moved to the lower floors for ageing in wooden barrels, cement and amphorae tanks, and in stainless steal tanks. The layout of the building allows for a naturally occurring variation between the floors in terms of temperature, ventilation, and humidity.

Modernity. Scacciadiavoli is consistently in quest of pushing the envelope of Umbria’s wine potential. Under the Pambuffetti family, Scacciadiavioli has experienced many firsts. They were the first winery to vinify a dry version of Sagrantino decades ago, and more recently, the first to vinify a sparkling Sagrantino using the metodo classico, and are now known around the world for their Sagrantino based sparkling brut and rosé wines.

Old and new world techniques, a blend of international grapes (most notably Nebbiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc), rich clay and sand soils, a blend of coastal and higher altitude climates, and a history as the birthplace of winemaking in North America make Mexico possibly the most exciting wine making region in the world, and we are delighted to share some of the country’s best wines for the first time at our patio wine tasting tomorrow, Sunday, at 2:30!

Hosted by @malcolmriddle of @salvetoimports. Only a few seats remain, call to reserve, 540-253-5501. Find out more in our story.

✨The Journey of a Girasole Tomato ✨

From Chef Lou's garden to our kitchen, the journey is merely a walk from one end of our parking lot to the other, but it is one that requires great care, dedication, and anticipation for the Summer growing season. Weeding, tilling, and feeding the soil with food scraps from our kitchen, Chef Lou works all year to grow the most delicious tomatoes you will ever taste. Once the heirloom varieties are mature, simple preparations passed down from parents and grandparents allow Chef Lou's flavorful tomatoes to shine on your plate. The season is nearing its end, but Chef Lou still has so much in store for the last of his humble parking lot garden tomatoes.

Lydia’s olives, Mediterranean olives roasted with herbs, garlic, citrus, and red pepper, according to her Nonna’s recipe, and on our specials tonight. The olives are not from her two olive trees on the patio, but she is incredibly proud of this year’s bumper crop of about 32 olives total. Lydia has been carefully nurturing each tree and putting them out on our patio for about 8 years now.
